As defined by the Cleasby & Vigfusson Old Norse to English dictionary:

Old Norse word can mean:

1. f., pl. lár, the line of shoal water along the shore, edged by the surf; þekti hann at tré flaut í lánni, Mar.; hann hleypr út í lárnar ok bregðr í fiskinn öðrum enda á snærinu, Finnb. 220; líki Pompeius köstuðu þeir á sjá út, ok reiddi þat í lánni, Róm. 232: still in mod. usage:—poët. the sea generally, Lex. poët.; odd-lá = blood, Höfuðl.; járn-lá.
II. = læ, craft, a απ. λεγ. in Vsp.
III. hair, Lat. lanugo, cp. lóð; hár heitir lá, Edda 109.
2. pres. lái, pret. láði, part. láð; [Ulf. laian = λοιδορειν, John ix. 28, and used strong; A. S. lean; Hel. and O. H. G. lahan]:—to blame; la e-m e-t, eg lái þér það ekki, I do not blame thee for it; or, það er ekki láandi (gerund.), it is excusable. It is curious that no instance is on record from old writers, although the word must be old.
