Lat. vitis], a willow, Edda (gl.); þat er vex á víði, Pr. 474: in Icel. esp. willow-scrub, dwarf-willow, salix repens, fjalla-grávíðir = salix alpina glauca; bein-víðir, q. v.; loð-víðir or kotuns-víðir, the cotton-willow; haga-grávíðir, salix repens, Eggert Itin. ch. 267; used for thatching (cp. taug-reptr, Hm.), but esp. as fodder; many local names are derived from this plant: Víði-dalr, -nes, -hjalli, -ker (see kjarr), -skógr, Landn., FS., map of Icel.: Víð-dælir, men from Víðidalr (whence the family name Vidalin, descended from Arngrim lærdi).
